Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries (SEAL)
Client: STAR Net Libraries | Space Science Institute
This nationwide program supported nearly 15,000 libraries across the U.S. by distributing 5.6 million safe solar-viewing glasses, along with more than 200 solar science facilitation kits. SEAL also trained over 2,100 library staff as well as provided handouts, activities, and resources to help educators and patrons engage with solar science during the 2023 and 2024 eclipses.

The client wanted a branding system with illustrations to make the 2023 and 2024 eclipses exciting and easy to understand for kids and families. The project included a clear visual identity, custom drawings, solar-viewing glasses design, and helpful materials to support libraries in offering fun, hands-on learning for their communities.

Logo and Visual Elements
The acronym of Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries led to the creation of a fun SEAL mascot. Supporting visual illustrations were created with a “summer-time fun” feel to emphasize solar science while also focussing on eclipse events. This also helped separate it from more scientific heavy events centered around the eclipses.

Solar-Viewing Glasses
Several versions were created with input from the client and subject matter experts. The final design is fun and shows clear details of both the annular and total solar eclipses.
5.6 million glasses were distributed to libraries across the U.S.
Library Guide
A guide was developed to aid libraries in teaching solar science and eclipse viewing safety. I formatted the guide with the visual elements I created to make a fun and engaging layout design.
Library Resources
Multiple resources were developed for libraries such as social media graphic templates, certificates for completed workshops, and various activities on solar science. Activities were translated to Spanish as well to make them even more accessible to library communities.
