Flight Path

Client: STAR Net Libraries | HHMI Tangled Bank Studios

This campaign introduces communities to the science of birds and migration through free films, activities, and educational resources. The program raises awareness about bird migration and offers practical ways to protect birds, including turning off lights and marking windows to reduce collisions. Library activities help patrons learn about local and migratory species, understand how and why birds migrate, explore the science behind bird vision, and participate in community science that supports conservation.

  • The client required a full branding suite and illustrations to support public programming about bird science and migration. The project’s target audience is children, teens, and families. The designs need to complement existing video and learning resources. Deliverables included a logo, custom illustrations, social media graphics, and activity guides that helped libraries teach their communities about bird behavior, migration, and conservation.

Logo Exploration

When I was brought on to begin this project, the client was choosing between 3 names for the initiative. I was tasked to create a logo for each name option to help narrow down the selection. Each name gave a different feeling and I reflected that in each draft.

Logo of a crow shouting the word "birds!"

Focus on activism, energy, and excitement.

Logo with a duck in an aviator hat flying. It is in a stamp shape with the words "Flight Path"

Focus on migration with a playful feel.

Logo with a bird created out of an ampersand sign.

Focus on whimsy and fun.

Final Design and Direction

Flight Path was the chosen name with the main direction to focus on bird migration and using stamps to convey this.

Art Direction

Using imagery from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, I built a simple Photoshop workflow that created a consistent hand-illustrated look. This approach improved efficiency while keeping the visuals aligned with the project’s brand.

Bird Identification Cards

These cards were created with an icon and color system to convey information in an accessible way. Even though some groups are conveyed by color, the icons still display the meaning in the case of the cards being printed out in black and white.

Library Resources

Multiple resources were developed for libraries such as social media graphic templates, flyer templates, and various activities on bird conservation and migration.

Mural Activity

I developed this activity to showcase various bird migration flyways. It’s set up to print on 8.5 x 11 sized papers and taped together to form a giant mural.
